Dr. Shanita Brown, Founder/CEO

I’m Dr. Shanita Brown, an award winning licensed clinical mental health counselor, national board-certified counselor, speaker and trainer based in Raleigh, North Carolina. I am also a faculty member in the Counselor Education Program at East Carolina University. I’m a culturally affirming trauma therapist trained in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR). I primarily work with individuals that have experience various forms of intimate partner violence, such as domestic violence, sexual assault, anxiety, depression and various life transitions. I offer a safe compassionate nonjudgmental space for individuals to discuss the difficult things necessary to help them transition from bondage to freedom.

I’m a native of Kinston, NC with over 17 years of experience in the clinical mental health field providing individual counseling in various settings such as college counseling and community mental health. My greatest joy is empowering my clients to get unstuck and gain clarity to reach optimal wellness. I enjoy spending time with family and friends, exercise, traveling, the beach and yoga.

I have a Bachelors of Sociology, Masters of Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and Doctorate of Counselor Education from North Carolina State University. I am passionate about serving the counseling profession and community. I have published scholarly articles, professional presentations, have held various leadership positions on state, regional and national levels. Also, I am the creator of the American Counseling Association’s Intimate Partner Interest Network

Additional service includes the N.C. Domestic Violence Commission TaskforceSafeSpace Agency and most recently served on the Board of Directors for N.C. Coalition Against Sexual Assault.

I have received various recognition and awards in honor of service to the counseling profession and community. In 2021, recipient of the Jane E. Myers Counseling Wellness Award by the North Carolina Counseling Association; 2016 recipient of the Achievement Award at the Inaugural Black Mental Health Symposium.
